ABOUT THE GARDEN
Risheehat and Liza Hill Tea Estates, situated on the steep and scenic slopes just outside the town of Darjeeling in West Bengal, is a well-established two division tea garden known for producing some of the top grades of Darjeeling teas. Unique soil profiles and elevations ranging from 2500-4800 feet contribute to the characteristics that give this region-specific tea the connotation as the ‘champagne of tea’. This region of the Himalayan range is bordered by Nepal to the West, China to the North, Bhutan to the East, and Bangladesh to the South. Alongside tea, local populations organically grow crops of oranges, cardamom, flowers, and vegetables. Originally known as Tsering Bagan due to the predominance of Tserings (a Tibetan group) in the area, British planters established a tea garden here in the early 1900s. Renamed Risheehat, meaning ‘home of holy sages’, it earned its name from a group of meditators who took shelter there. Acquired by Jay Shree Tea management in 1955, it comprises two major divisions: Risheehat Main Division and Liza Hill Division. Today, the estate boasts an annual production of over 180 tons of certified bio-organic teas, maintaining a healthy zero percent vacancy. With certifications including Fair Trade, ISO 9001:2015 by TUV NORD, HACCP, and organic certifications for NPOP, NOP, and JAS by IMO, Risheehat Tea Estate exemplifies a commitment to quality, sustainability, and ethical practices.
