Many people buy green tea as they offer several health benefits. However, if you are new to drinking green tea, you may find it a little difficult to have it without sugar. But do you know in many cultures green tea is consumed without any sweetener? You too can learn to drink green tea without natural sweeteners. Here are some useful tips:

  1. Follow the right brewing method
The bitterness that you may taste could be because of following wrong brewing techniques. When hot boiling water is used for black tea, you get a rich colour and strong taste. Hot boiling water is ideal for black tea as it is fermented longer and has lower levels of tannic phenols. However, hot boiling water will make green tea lose its subtle flavour and emphasise the bitter taste of the tannic phenols. You should boil water and just let it sit for a few minutes before using it to brew green tea.
  2. Steeping the tea for too long
One of the most important things to master when making a flavourful, well-balanced cup of green tea is the steep time. When brewing black tea, as mentioned above, it is recommended to use boiling water and it can be steeped from 3-5 minutes. Some varieties of balck tea may require more or less time.
On the other hand, green teas taste better when steeped in hot water (not boiling hot) for a longer period, typically several minutes.. Small green tea leaves will brew more quickly than large ones. If you are trying a particular type of green tea for the first time, steep for 3 minutes and then taste every 30 seconds to achieve the best results. Always read the tea packaging for the right steep time and temperature.
  3. Do not use too much green tea
For the best extraction of green tea flavour, use around one teaspoon of tea leaves (or as instructed on the tea packet). You may add more in case after a minute or so, if you find the taste too bland.  Using more than recommended green tea leaves can lend a strong taste which may compel you to add sugar or honey.
  4. Try different types of green teas
There are several types of green tea. Some have lighter and grassier taste, while others have more robust notes. Try different kinds and see which one you like to drink without adding sugar.
  5. Try alternative sweeteners
Instead of white sugar, you can use low glycemic sugar alternatives such as coconut palm sugar, stevia leaf and date sugar. Organic honey has a lower glycemic index (GI) than sugar. A dash of honey can elevate the lift of the green tea.
