THE WAY
SIDE CHAPEL
|
|
An English lady, while visiting Switzerland, was
looking for a room and asked a school master if he
could recommend one. He took her to see several rooms
and when everything was settled she returned to her
home to make final preparations for her move to
Switzerland. However, when she arrived home, the
thought suddenly occurred to that she had not seen
a"W.C." around there. Now , the School
Master him, if there was in fact a "W.C."
meant and the only meaning that they could
discover for these strange letters was "wayside
chapel". So the School Master, then drafted
a letter to the English lady in the following
manner.
Dear Madam,
I take great pleasure in informing you that the W.C.
is situated only 9 miles from the house, in the centre
of a beautiful grove of trees, surrounded by lovely
grounds. It is capable of holding 229 people
comfortably and it is open on Thursday and Sundays
only. As there are a great number of people expected
during the Summer months, I'd suggest that you come
early, although there is usually plenty of standing
room even if you are not able to get a seat. Granted,
this is an unfortunate situation, particularly if you
are in the habit of going regularly. You will no
doubt be glad to hear, that a good number bring their
own lunch with them and make a day of it. I would
specially recommend to your ladyship to go to the
"W.C." on Thursdays when there is an organ
accompaniment. The acoustics are excellent and even
the most delicate sounds are heard every-where. I
shall be delighted to reserve the best seat for you
and if you wish, where you can be seen by all. For the
children, there is a special time and place, so that
they will not disturb the elders, who would like to
sit there quietly and be recollected.
Hoping I have been of some service to you,
Yours sincerely,
School Master.

TEA WITH DIFFERENCE
|
Examples of value addition!!
Tea was used as the starting material for a
fermented product (Tea sherry Tea wine). The brew
was fermented for five weeks , giving an alcohol
;
content of about 10% . In order to reduce
bitterness and prevent a coating of polyphenols
on the tongue, the fermented brew was matured in
wooden casks (Berraya cordifolia).
After about two months ,a product with good
clarity and color resulted, ready for commercial
exploitation . Tea was incorporated into yogurt
to use it as a natural colouring agent and to
increase the shelf life by making use of tea's
antioxidant properties and to enhance the health
benefits of yogurt by incorporating two gms of
tea per litre of milk during yogurt production.
TASTE
THE DIFFERENCE
LEI TEA ....Put tea leaves, cooked peanuts,
sesame seed and rice into a ceramic jar, add
ginger, pepper, salt and grind this mixture into
a powder , distribute this powder into cups and
pour boiling water over into stir well. Lei
tea is yellowish in colour, has a smokey smell
and is said to be very tasty!!!

Seven Deadly sins
Wealth without work. Pleasure without conscience. Knowledge without
character. Commerce without ethics. Science without humanity. Religion
without sacrifice. And Politics without principles.
Truth
Truth is a sacred matter. Truth involves a proper understanding of
reality, but it also involves much more than that. Truth also has a
personal dimension, an emotional dimension, and an ethical dimension.
Truth is personal...It is a special part of any close human relationship.
Trust is a by product of truth and personal relationships built upon
trust. We trust people who demonstrates that they are truthful. We do not
trust people who show themselves habitual liars. A person who is
trustworthy is a person who is truthful. Broken truth hurts... Evil loves
to attack and distort the truth, broken truth often means a broken heart.
This is the problem which lies. We do invest our hearts in promises which
are not kept and stories proved to be false we are hurt. We are
disillusioned. We sometimes grow bitter. Trust is a fragile commodity and
is as precious as it is delicate. Deep levels of trust take years to
develop. Yet such trust can be smashed to pieces in seconds.
"Why not Both"
There is many a time when we are pressurized to make a decision one way or
the other ...It has to be "either" or "or" But why not
both !!!. Some examples of these are : I want to speak to someone the long way
away, but don't want to travel ... heard of the telephone
!!!
I want to go out but don't want to miss the movie on T.V .. what of the
video recorder!
I want to change the station on T.V but don't want to get out of bed ... that little gadget called the remote
will do very nicely !!!

Thoughts From Your Editor....
April
2001 will open a new chapter for India in the International
market place, there is an apprehension and perhaps a touch of
fear as to what the future will hold for a whole slew of
industries, Tea being one of them. Indian crop for year 2000
closed at 823.4 million Kgs, modestly higher by 17.8 million
Kgs over the previous year. Prices however crashed and this
reflected in the bottom lines of all tea companies. The market
continues to be hesitant and the single word mantra is
"Quality". There is gossip that cheap teas from
China, Indonesia and Vietnam will flood the country. May be, I
am a die hard optimist and if we can re-work our strategies in
marketing, support the department by doing all that is in our
power to improve upon our Quality we will be able to say
"Let us not be afraid of competition but let competition
be afraid of us". This Tea industry, which has given
comfort and succor to millions of tea drinkers throughout the
world can and will bounce back to be a stock brokers delight
!!
On a different vein, some gems that I have picked up in my travels
through life
-
Judge People from where they stand and not
from where you stand.
-
Don't believe all you hear , spend all
you have
or sleep all you want !!
-
Don't let weeds to grow around your dreams.
-
Pray not for the stilling of pen but for the
heart to conquer it.
-
Spends some time alone.
-
Read more books... and watch less
TV.
-
Avoid approaching horses and restaurants
from the rear !!!
LEADERSHIP LAWS
- Vision:
-
Vision is like a lighthouse showing
the way and pointing out hazards. It must be slightly beyond reach,
but must not be an impossible dream.
- Values:
-
If vision gives the direction, values
set the boundaries. Leaders need the values to be absolutely
transparent in whatever they do.
- Energy:
-
The leader must work both hard and
smart, long and intensely. It's the only way to keep on top of the
demands.
- Confidence:
-
Self-confident leaders assume
responsibility for their mistakes and share credit with their team
members.
- Innovation:
-
Ideas have a limited shelf-life. The
leader must create a culture of continuous innovation.
- Team Building:
-
The leader must attract the best minds
and with these minds create a team which will bend in the winds
of change but not break.

- A
funny story making the rounds about the art of
communication through the chain of command, goes like
this:
A Colonel issued the following order to his
executive officer, "Tomorrow evening at
approximately 2000 hours Halley's comet will be visible
in this area, an event which occurs only once every 75
years. Have the men fall out in the battalion area in
fatigues, and I will explain this rare phenomenon to
them. In case of rain, we will not be able to see
anything, so assemble the men in the theatre and I will
show them films of it". Clear enough, so the executive
officer wrote to the company commander : "By order
of the Colonel, tomorrow at 2000 hours Halley's comet
will appear over the battalion area. If it rains, fall
the men out in fatigues, then march them to the theatre
where this rare phenomenon will take place, something
which occur only once every 75 years." The Company Commander
thereafter instructed his lieutenant, "By order of
the Colonel in fatigues at 2000 hours tomorrow evening,
the phenomenal Halley's comet will appear in the
theatre. In case of rain in the battalion area, the
Colonel will give another order , something which occurs
once every 75 years." Snapped the lieutenant to his sergeant: "Tomorrow
2000 hours, the colonel will appear in the theatre
with Halley's comet in fatigues, something which happens
every 75 years. If it rains the colonel will order the
comet into the battalion
area." AND the sergeant commanded his
squad: When it rains tomorrow at 2000
hours, the phenomenal 75 year old General Halley,
accompanied by the colonel, will drive his comet through
the battalion area theatre in fatigues."

HRD for Plantation

Competitive advantage of an Industry depends upon the quality of its
Human Resources. A continuous upgrading of skills
with the ultimate aim of enhancing human capital reserves is
imperative.
Dr.Subhas Sharma has proposed a model based on the BEST method
B :
Behavioral (man
management, labour productivity, quality of people and value addition of
people). E : Economic (Financial management, productivity of capital,
cost of quality). S : Strategic (marketing products and sales
1 strategy, value addition, customer orientation) T : Technical (
machine management and productivity, technical aspects of quality)
With liberalization, globalization and increased competition
survival has to become an concern for both management and workers. this
can be described as a shift from Marx to Gandhi, as Marx symbolizes the
conflict approach and Gandhi the harmonization approach both of whom
were interested in the welfare of workers. The requirement of improving
HRD managerial skills has taken on important dimension, in far thinking
companies, who believe they are investing in future of their
companies

THE NEW INTERNATIONAL STANDARD FOR QUALITY
Back to Top
ISO 9000 : 2000
There is going to be a major revision for
ISO 9000 Quality standards. Known as the ISO 9000 : 2000 series, they
result from an extensive consultation process and have been very
carefully drafted to offer a range of more user friendly descriptions of
the processes of implementation that reflects the latest management
thinking and takes into account the wealth of practical experience
gained from ISO 9000 systems. The essential changes : Until now
ISO 9000 has contained some 27 standards and documents, these will be
replaced by four primary standards :
-
ISO
9000 : 2000 Quality Management Systems, Fundamentals and
vocabulary.
-
ISO
9001 : 2000 Quality Management Systems, Requirements.
-
ISO

for Performance Improvements.
-
ISO
19011 : Guidelines
on Quality and Environmental Auditing.
It is the ISO 9001 and 9004
Standards that are at the centre of the improvements, and
are based on a process model using eight quality management
principles. These are :
-
Customer
focused organization.
-
Leadership.
-
Involvement of
people.
-
Process
approach.
-
System approach
to Management.
-
Continual
Improvement.
-
Factual approach
to decision-making.
-
Mutually
beneficial supplier relationship.
The new standards retain the
essence of current ISO 9000 requirements but are presented
in five sections.
-
Quality
Management Systems.
-
Management
responsibility.
-
Resource
Management.
-
Production
and/or service realization.
-
Measurement,
analysis and improvement.
The benefits that will be
derived from the revised ISO 9000 :2000 systems are :
-
Customers and
users will receive products that confirm to requirement,
available when needed.
-
People in the
organisation will benefit from better working conditions,
increased job satisfaction, improved morale.
-
Owners and
investors will benefit from increased return on investment,
improved operational results, increased profits.
-
Suppliers will
benefit from stability, growth, and mutual understanding.
-
Society will
benefit from fulfillment of statuary and regulatory
requirements, improved health and safety and reduced
environmental impacts.
Final publication of the standards is currently targeted
for mid 2002.
